About CarrierPedia
CarrierPedia is an independent reference site for the roughly 2.2 million active commercial motor carriers registered with the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It brings together five separate public FMCSA datasets — the Company Census File, the Safety Measurement System (SMS), the Crash File, the Vehicle Inspection File, and the Motus operating-authority and insurance records — into a single, searchable carrier profile.
Today, that information is scattered across several different FMCSA systems (SAFER, MOTUS, the SMS website), each with its own interface and none of which show safety history, operating authority, and insurance status side by side. CarrierPedia exists to make that comparison possible in one place, for free.
Who operates this site
CarrierPedia is operated as an independent publisher. It is not a government agency, contractor, or vendor of the FMCSA or the U.S. Department of Transportation. See our Data Sources page for exactly which FMCSA datasets we use and how often each one refreshes.
What this site is
- A free lookup tool for USDOT numbers, MC numbers, and carrier safety records.
- A place to see FMCSA-published crash history, inspection results, and out-of-service rates for a specific carrier, alongside how that carrier compares to national and state medians.
- A reference for brokers, shippers, and carriers who want to check operating authority and insurance status before booking a load or signing a contract.
What this site is not
- It is not FMCSA, SAFER, or any official government system, and it cannot change a carrier's official FMCSA record. Corrections go through FMCSA's own DataQs process — see Data Corrections.
- It does not publish personal contact information. Phone numbers, fax numbers, and company officer names present in the source data are discarded before they ever reach our database — see Privacy.
- It does not issue safety ratings, insurance, or any FMCSA credential, and a carrier's appearance on this site is not an endorsement of that carrier's safety or creditworthiness.
- It is not a consumer reporting agency, and nothing here is a consumer report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It may not be used to decide anyone's eligibility for employment, credit, insurance, or housing — see Terms of Use.
- It does not determine fault. Crash records come from the FMCSA Crash File, which logs that a carrier's vehicle was involved in a reportable crash and says nothing about who caused it.
