DOT Number Lookup

Enter a USDOT number to open that carrier's profile — safety record, operating authority, insurance status, and fleet details, all sourced from public FMCSA datasets.

Works for any of the carriers currently indexed on this site. If a DOT number doesn't resolve, it may not have enough published FMCSA data yet for a profile.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is a unique identifier the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) assigns to a commercial motor carrier, freight forwarder, or broker operating in interstate commerce, and in most states, for intrastate commerce too. It's the primary key FMCSA uses to track a company's safety record, inspections, crashes, and registration status — every other FMCSA record about a carrier (its Company Census filing, SMS safety data, crash history) is indexed by this number.

Who needs a USDOT number?

Generally, any company operating commercial motor vehicles used to transport passengers or haul cargo in interstate commerce needs one if the vehicle: has a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 lbs, is designed to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation, transports more than 15 passengers not for compensation, or transports hazardous materials in a quantity requiring a safety permit. Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate-only operations above similar weight thresholds.

Where to find a carrier's USDOT number

By law, USDOT numbers must be displayed on the power unit of most commercial motor vehicles that require one, usually on the door or side of the cab. If you don't have the number, try our Carrier Name Search instead, or the carrier's Motor Carrier (MC) number with our MC Number Lookup.
