How Many Trucking Companies Are There in the US, Really

You'll see the figure "3.5 million trucking companies" or similar repeated across the industry press, usually without a source. The real answer depends entirely on which of several very different FMCSA counts you're using — and they differ by more than an order of magnitude between the loosest and strictest definitions.

What CarrierPedia actually counts

As of this site's most recent data refresh, FMCSA's Company Census File lists 2,233,509 carriers with an active USDOT registration (status_code = 'A') — this is the figure we treat as "how many trucking companies there are" throughout this site, and it's the most defensible answer to the question, because it reflects carriers FMCSA currently considers authorized to operate, as opposed to ones that registered at some point in the past and later shut down, merged, or let their registration lapse.

Why other sources report wildly different numbers

  • The full historical registry — every USDOT number FMCSA has ever issued, active or not — runs into the several millions, because a registration, once issued, stays in the historical file even after a carrier goes inactive. Reporting this figure as "how many trucking companies there are" overstates the current industry by a wide margin.
  • Carriers with enough published safety data for a meaningful profile —1,270,267 of the 2,233,509 active carriers meet that bar on this site (see About for the exact criteria). The rest are active and real, but FMCSA simply hasn't published enough inspection, crash, or authority data yet to support a full profile — often because they're newly registered or operate too small a fleet to generate much inspection activity.
  • Carriers with a full SMS safety record — 703,732 active carriers have enough recent inspection activity for FMCSA to calculate Safety Measurement System BASIC scores at all (see How to Read an SMS Percentile).

Owner-operators are most of that number

51,180 active carriers are registered as sole proprietor ("INDIVIDUAL") operations rather than a corporation, LLC, or partnership — a large share of the active total, and a useful reminder that "trucking company" often means one person and one truck. See Fleet Size Distribution in US Trucking for the full breakdown by fleet size, and Owner-Operator vs Fleet for what the Census data shows about how the two groups differ beyond just size.

So, how many, really?

If someone asks "how many trucking companies are there in the US," the most accurate short answer is: 2,233,509 currently active FMCSA registrations, the large majority of them owner-operators or small fleets, with a comparatively small number of carriers accounting for a disproportionate share of total hauling capacity — see Where US Trucking Capacity Actually Sits for how that breaks down geographically.
